History

Dorben Polytechnic Abuja is a Private Polytechnic approved by the Federal Ministry of Education and accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). It was established in accordance with Decree 9 of 1993, and was previously known as Abuja School of Accountancy and Computer Studies.

The Institution started operation in 1996 as a Professional Training Centre. In 1999, the Institution was granted approval to operate as National Diploma/Higher National Diploma (ND/HND) awarding Institution by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). In 2006, the institution applied for conversion to a full-fledged Polytechnic and this was finally approved in 2008 by the then Honourable Minister of Education.

The Polytechnic had a modest beginning with 250 students. Presently it has more than 1,234 students with over 183 academic staff. So far, it has produced more than 10,000 ND & HND graduates in various fields of endeavours.

Dorben Polytechnic is a strong member of National Association of Private Polytechnics in Nigeria. Recently, in February 2022, the Polytechnic successfully hosted the meeting of Proprietors of Private Polytechnics in Nigeria (Northern Zone).

Admissions into the National Diploma Programmes of the Institution are done through Universal Tertiary Matriculation (UTME) organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

In addition, the Authority of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has since 2008 formally reorganized the Polytechnic as a corps producing institution. Consequently, Higher National Diploma (HND) Graduates of Dorben Polytechnic are mobilized for one year NYSC after successful completion of the respective Higher National Diploma (HND) Programmes.
